Continuing the longstanding tradition of annual Student Art Shows at Art Village to celebrate our students' yearly artistic development and creative pursuits, our 2026 theme is... Perception!
"Perception" involves the complex processes through which individuals interpret the world, combining sensory experiences, cognitive understanding, and emotional responses. Our 2025-2026 curriculum explores how visual and material manipulation affects art and design perception.
Understanding "Perception" in Our Curriculum

Some of the key ideas we will focus on for "Perception" include multiple interpretations, emotional responses evoked by colour, different cultural contexts, perspective, optical illusions, abstraction, and texture. Some of the artists we will be learning from include Norman Rockwell, David Ambarzumja, Elyse Dodge, Patrick Hughes, and more! Last month, we focused on the self-portraiture techniques of Norman Rockwell, a famous illustrator belonging to the Golden Age of Illustration.
The curriculum culminates in a May 2026 exhibition, where students will present their work to the community, showcasing their insights into perception's impact on art and life.

The Poster
Instructor Claire has been steadily working on creating a poster that embodies all these intricate ideas related to the theme of Perception. This theme encompasses not only how we view the world around us but also how our interpretations can differ based on individual experiences and perspectives. Below, you will see a sneak peek of what she's been diligently crafting over the past few weeks.
What do you see when you look at her artwork? Is it merely an aquatic setting filled with rocks, barnacles, shells, and seaweeds, or does it evoke something deeper? Perhaps you can spot an amphibious dragon subtly integrated into the scene, blending seamlessly with the natural elements.

From this captivating painting, we can see some intriguing references to Giuseppe Arcimboldo, an artist renowned for his imaginative and thought-provoking works that often depicted hidden faces within landscapes and even in arrangements of simple vegetables! Arcimboldo's unique approach challenges viewers to look beyond the surface and discover the layers of meaning that lie beneath, much like what Claire aims to achieve with her poster.

We can't wait to reveal the final poster with you all, but for now, you can save the date and stay updated by following our Instagram to see our students' curriculum projects!
